  • The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its 13th annual Grown-Up Spelling Bee Tuesday, March 18, at the Watauga High School gymnasium. The contest saw teams comprised of members from area businesses and organizations, competing for the respect of their peers — and an assortment of prizes. Chetola Resort’s Word Nerds, featuring Marcia Greene, Ruthie Nathan, Allison West and Kara Miller, took first, defeating Samaritan’s Purse’s Disaster Bee-lief Crew of Jennie Miller, Laurie Barbour, Susan Barlow and Debbie Henderson in wham-bang contest over “onomatopoeia.” Proceeds from the event will benefit the Western Youth Network, which was presented a check for $1,000 upon the bee's conclusion.
